College of Medical and Dental Sciences (University of Birmingham, UB)
Infrastructure and Resources:UB is one of the UK’s best Medical Schools, with significant external research funding. The “Development and Metabolism Genes” group is part of a larger “Hormones and Genes” grouping in the School of Clinical and Experimental Meicine (with 32 principal investigators (PIs) and >100 Early Stage Researchers) that is housed within the Institute of Biomedical Research (IBR). IBR provides a world class core infrastructure including confocal and intravital microscopy, proteomics, genomics, transgenic facilities and a high quality Biomedical Services Unit providing access to rodent and zebrafish-based models. The group includes 8 Principal Investigators (PIs), 11 Experienced Researchers and 17 Early Stage Researchers. It is supported by 8M Euros current grant income. Major contribution to BOLD will be provided by Paul Gissen (Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine) expertise: Inherited metabolic diseases, Intracellular trafficking in polarised epithelial cells, and Ferenc Mueller (Senior Lecturer in Developmental Genetics) expertise: high throughput functional analysis of enhancers in transgenic zf. Fellows will also benefit from interactions with experts including: Professor Maher (genetic of human diseases), Professor McKeating (liver cell and molecular biology, liver pathology), Professor Kelly (genetics of human liver disorders), Professor Barrett (Molecular Genetics of Diabetes).
